What is Christmas Ugly Sweater Day or Ugly Sweater Day?
Ugly Christmas Sweater Day, traditionally celebrated on the third Friday of December each year, in 2020 falls on December 18

An ugly Christmas sweater or sweater is any piece of clothing that has amazing Christmas decorations on it, like reindeer, Christmas trees, or Santa Claus, for example. The more ornate/sticky the better.
In the United States and Canada, these Christmas outfits are as popular as Black Friday or Christmas lights. It is not known who invented this fashion, knitting sweaters for children is a tradition that we all know.

For centuries, mothers and grandmothers have made sweaters and other clothing for young children at home.
In Anglo-Saxon countries during the year the colors could be blue and pink, but at Christmas red and green were the predominant colors. Little ones like Santa Claus or reindeer sweaters seemed to be favorites.

Since the end of the 19th century, such jackets have existed. But it was in the 20th century, already in the 80s, that television and actors like Bill Cosby managed to popularize the “ugly Christmas blouses”.

In the United States specifically, Bill Cosby sets the fashion trends every year with his “ugly Christmas sweaters”. In the 90s, Christmas sweaters continued to be out of fashion, and it was in the 2000s that they came back with more force.

Apparently, the first ugly Christmas party was held in Vancouver in 2002. It was a charity event to raise money for the Make a Wish Foundation in Canada.

The ‘dress code’ for the party calls for wearing one of these Christmas sweaters. Starting in the 2000s, vintage stores, fashion chains like H&M or even religious movements like the Salvation Army popularized Christmas sweaters.
How Do You Celebrate Ugly Christmas Sweater Day?

There is no shortage of laughter on this day and, to celebrate it, you must meet three requirements.
- Buy or give other people Christmas sweaters, the more ornate the better, new ones if possible (not a repeat of last year).

- Wear a Christmas sweater all day on the exact day (December 21) wherever you go. From the time you wake up until the time you go to sleep, whether it’s to go to work or to a community meeting.
- Immortalize your day with a Christmas sweater and take photos and videos with your family, your partner, your pet or by yourself. These photos or videos are then shared with friends and family (who, in turn, share their photos).
